My Mother's Time

by Joan Serratelli

I saw her last night
I looked into her eyes
and saw nothing
the shell of a woman
I used to call "the rock"

She looked tired and weak
and spoke softly
and told me that she loved me
but her time was growing near

I had to leave
to run away and scream
I'm not ready to lose her
but I think she's ready to go

Her legacy will be her strength
her unwillingness to give up
The children she raised
are now both grown

They will say she lived
a full life; 83 years
is quite a run
But her life was filled
with hardship and grief
something she rose above

I'll miss her; I love her
but if her time is near
I just want G-d to have mercy
and let her go in peace

Author's Note: My Mother is quite ill. I think she feels her own mortality. My mother died peacefully in her sleep last night. I thank G-d it was a painless passing :-(

Joan, this is so much in the voice I've grown to love in your poems, straight-forward, deeply feeling and honest. A wonderful elegy, your Mother would be proud of. Peace to her, and to you and yours. Thanks.

Hi Joan, This is so beautiful and sad too. I'm so sorry to hear about your Mother. I've been thru it resently, as well as some others I know. I have loss my Mom back in Nov 06. And my Dad in Feb, 07. I know and feel your love and pain too. You and your family in my prayers. Lots of hugs. If you need to talk, I'm here for you.

Loving tribute and powerful reminder that I'm convinced beyond a doubt we all know when our time is near. Like you, I see my mother as a rock; and will keep her in my heart as such long after she's gone. God bless.

Joan, I'm sad to hear about your Mom, because it reminds me of mine. The one thought that keeps me going is that her legacy was something like your Mother's - strength and life's lessons well taught. The other thing is that I know I'll see her when I cross the Rainbow Bridge. Your Mother's life sounds like my Mother - her's was filled with much heatache, grief, and struggles too. Hold her close until it's time for her to go. And if you need strength, you can lean on some of us who've been through what you're going through right now. Peace be with you.

You make me want my mommy back, Joan. Despite who she was and what she did, she always had open arms for me. I'm so sorry for your loss. We will always be the children of our parents. That's truly not a bad thing. I hope you have many happy memories to help you out. Remember, she suffers no more. *hugs*

Bravo to you for putting these enormous and flood-filled feelings to paper. This is a poem about light rather than darkness, which I truly applaud you for...
