Your Flower

by Maureen Glaude

I am your flower.
My small intricate buds
only you possess the magic
to open into blossom.

At your will
my green shoots strengthen
catch the raindrops, shimmer,
push my head up above the blades
of early May grass,
decorate the daylight.

The touch of your fingers nurtures
my hope of beauty - blush of colour,
waters me into freshness.

Removal of your caress will make
me a scrawny straggler - out of season,
poorly dressed, a ruse among my sisters.
Void of purpose, misplanted seed
which might have glorified a lawn
but loses out to weeds.

For tucked within my pink silkfolds
rests a tiny delicate centre
that is my heart.

And when those breaths of yours
upon the breeze donÂ’t come,
nor your whispers of caring on the wind,
and your hands do not pat the soil around me,
or stroke my stem, winning my floral smile
then must my season fade out of place
my skin of silky petals droop,
my coral heart shiver as if in late winterÂ’s frost,
and the splendour of my species leave me lost.

But if you choose to coax me like a harp string,
support me through the midnights,
receive my voice across the reeds of green,
you will see me flourish, queen of the gardenbeds
if only for one brief, sparkling season.

And find that I shall thrive.

Hi Maureen. Beautiful right through the final strophe! Who wouldn't love this? Excellent work, I'll enjoy reading many times. Thanks.

Quite remarkable. Words are at your command for sure in this garden, and I can feel the symbiosis twixt the flower and you, a real desire to be a part of each other's existence. There are many wonderful lines, but "receive my voice across the reeds of grass" resonates deeply in my gardner's soul. Thank you so much for sharing this.

Now I'm green with envy, wishing I had written this powerful metaphoric piece. One of your recent best IMO, though how can one compare when each is a flower unique to itself. Touché!

wow! that's all i can say... simply wow! this just resonates within me.. why is it that a lover's support and touch can make you breathe in life that you never know was out there :)
