I Just Don't Understand

by Joan Serratelli

I cannot, for the life of me
understand why you continue to protect her
she would never do the same for you

I will never understand why
the bond you feel with her
(as one sided as it is)
continues to florish

She has never once
shown you anything
other than contempt
yet you continue
to ally yourself with her
at my expense

She will never be
what you want her
to be, or to do
what you want her to do

...But you continue to accept
I can't and I won't,
but then again, I'm not you

You love her so blindly
that you forget all the wrongs
hoping
praying
that she'll change
that she'll love you
...she won't
and all you will accomplish
is the allienation of everybody else

Is it worth it?
Is she worth it?

WEll expressed, Joan. So many emotions here - unconditional love can mean just that, without asking for anything in return, even if it seems misdirected. Letting go, on the other hand, can also be true love - letting that person find their own way and letting you be at peace with your own values. It is many times simply in the view point. I hope for a good outcome here, perhaps many years down the road.

Everyone of us has a unique preception; seeing the same thing, one will say red, the other yellow. It's the indisputable that gives us trouble. I think that's where, "the blind leading the blind" starts to kick in! You call them as they are...good job, Joan.

I have read this about 6 times now. You have done a great job building up your incredulity and disappointment...this is great!

So well said in a most vivid and fluent way, Joan. Love can be blind in so many ways. I guess it is sometimes just plain easier that way, isn't it? A most thought provoking poem.
