Take Off the Gloves by Kristina WoodhillBring up the lights!
Let the audience begin;
I'll admit the soft staid gloves
Should be far flung
Their reserve dropped
Once again.
I see by your elated grin
That this year's plays' reviews are in;
Bring up the lights,
Take off the gloves,
Let's take a bow.
Switch off the prompt!
There'll be no cue cards read today.
We practiced this one
quite enough and found whatever
words we missed, the laughter caused
sent doubt upon its way.
The props set up to add suspense,
each gate was found to cross each fence;
Bring up the lights,
Take off the gloves,
Let's take a bow.
Fling wide the doors!
Let the critics find another prey;
You've proven that this script of ours
has held its message strong, and seen
the ink become indelible
for yet another day.
Bring up the lights!
Take off the gloves,
Let's take a bow.

Posted by Gregory O'Neill on 12/20/06 at 12:42 AM It is rather performance-like. A long running hit is best! There is a French saying that translates (roughly): "love is the dawn of marriage, and marriage is the sunset of love." both...some accomplishment!
Congrats to you |
Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 12/20/06 at 08:07 AM Although "take off the gloves" often precedes a fight, I was relieved to read otherwise in this stage piece, with its nicely extended metaphor. Please take a bow...both of you. :) |
Posted by Christel Crews on 12/22/06 at 01:13 AM 35 years! that's no small accomplishment! congrats! this is a very sweet piece and i'd say after 35 years, i bet you have the script down pretty well! congrats! |
Posted by Kathleen Wilson on 12/22/06 at 07:56 PM Wonderful and consistent imagery--and an unusual and effective, as well as cheerful and stylish set. Do you do real theater--act in plays, etc --did the idea come from your own experience? An amusing connection, which makes me identify very much with this: my bellydance teacher did a caberet workshop with a glove striptease! I took the class-- and all we took off (very dramatically) were our gloves!! (long opera gloves) Lots of fun..your poem and relationship is great..happy anniversary! |

Posted by Ken Harnisch on 01/09/07 at 05:25 PM Reminds me of Shania Twain's "Still The One" in its celebration of longetivity triumphing over the doubts and cynicism of the outside world...my heartiest congratulations on the poem and your anniversary! |
