Something Hiding In Our Fridge

by Dave Fitzgerald

'There's something hiding in the fridge!'
I ran and told my Mum.
'I know it's hiding in the fridge.'
I said, and grabbed her hand to come.

She asked me what was in the fridge,
'What was it you saw?'
I said, 'It had tusks! Its back was ridged!
I think it was a boar...

Or...

A giraffe! Hiding in the fridge!
Amazing it has to be said,
But I know it's hiding in the fridge
From the mark where it bumps its head!

Or...

A hippo Mum! Hiding in the fridge.
I know you think "No Way!"
But I know it's hiding in our fridge.
It's sat in the egg tray.'

'Or a camel...?' She smiled, 'In my fridge?
I suppose I should see it as karma
That if I remove the camel from the fridge
I'll find hidden behind it a llama?'

'Exactly Mum,

Or an elephant.
My tummy is all of a flutter,
But I know it could be there in our fridge
From the footprints in our butter!

Or...

A great white shark in OUR fridge,
Or something of that ilk,
I heard a cello and saw the fin
Circling in the milk!'

She said,

'So many animals in my fridge.
There's hardly space to spare.
So like Mother Hubbard I'll leave the fridge
And find in my cupboard a bear?'

She laughed...

But got no milk from the fridge
But I can't say that I blame her
Because there was a lion in the fridge
Complete with lion tamer!

Marvelous poem about the marvelous creatures we imagine to habit our refrigerators. And speaking of strange and misunderstood creatures, I believe ( lest it was my imagination, ) I observed a ham once, or was it a dunce in my refrigerator, cooked to perfection; but when I gave an acuter look, I noticed it was merely my reflection.

Dave, this is wonderful! I love children's poetry and this is one of the best I've read. I agree with Jennifer - I was seeing this as a book with every new animal your narrator introduced. Great job!
