Less Than Three

It’s an emoticon,
one of those little pictures
created in typography
by folks on the internet.
Like the smiley-face, for example,
colon and closed parentheses:
:)
…making happiness a product of
what is to come, and a finished afterthought.
This one is the “less-than” sign
and the numeral 3,
making a sort of sideways heart:
<3
…an equation that tells us
love equals less than three.
The ménage a trois would argue,
but the love triangle might agree.
Three’s a crowd, we say,
but two knocks the heart sideways,
and even narcissistic one is acceptable,
the only other solution,
except for tennis, where love equals nothing.
