cemetery blues

by Charlie Morgan

i watched the old gravedigger
put peoplesÂ’ loves in boxes;
he said that the dirt kept them
warm until the chill
left their bones.

i asked the old man what was
the meaning of life;
he said he didnÂ’t
even know the meaning
of death.

chaz ~ don't ya know? the meaning of life is death...those are really the only two things we have to do ~ we have to be born and once born we have to die...everything in between is just the loading/unloading zone... love ya :)

I really like this unique look at the cemetery by way of the gravedigger. Why would he know anything different than us? Thought provoking.

Great philosphical statement..almost zen like in its simplicity..presents a new way to view an old question - Well done Chaz! - RCat

One of your recent best IMO Chaz. Love the question and comeback in the second stanza. Adds to favourites.

i really likeed this, although I have no idea why. I think it's because I could see the gravedigger in my mind's eye!

Hi Chaz. How can we know death when we barely yet know life? Coming empty-handed, going empty-handed -- that is merely human. This is just excellent, and so aptly titled! Thanks.

My fav subject...how could I not enjoy this? Here lies a supreme example of repetition not equaling learning...no matter how many holes he fills, the hole remains empty still.

Great, what a last line!

Tonight appears to be my night to read your latest poems, and I'm glad, because they are fantastic! This one is so simple, but evokes a thousand emotions and opens as many questions in the heart and mind.

this is a deep hole you've dug here, mr. morgan-- but it's not an empty hole, you've filled it again with so many possibilities. Cool ponder, simply and lyrically articulated. intriguing tone.
