An Elegy for Conformity by Lacy D PhillipsWe live on separate frequencies
where TV is the new reality.
We document our mediocrity,
and idolize celebrities.
We pave over our history
to develop more conformity.
We're broadcasting our way into oblivion.
Neurons replaced with magnetic tape and silicone.
I want to cast off my apathy, strip to my foundations.
I've got to break out of this life and get some real living done.
I need to be free, I need to be free, I need to be free
of the mandates of society.
I'm reclaiming my spirituality,
indulging my eccentricities,
I'll establish originality,
give expression to my artistry
even if it kills me. 09/14/2006 Author's Note: Hah! I just wrote this without the aid of thesaurus or rhyming dictionary because I'd challenged myself to write "unplugged" while following a strict form, neither of which are my usual practices. I wanted to force myself to write in a specific rhythm because I rarely ever do so. It was an excersize. And a successful one. Why use many small words when one large one will do?
