Eighty Winks by Leslie Ann EisenbergIts 3:00 o'clock,
Time for the cave
My sons bunk bed,
The lower, my rented space
For one hour
Dark down here, cozy respite
Thin mattress on wood slats.
The bed my dad built
Cradles me to dreamcalm
As does the musty boy smell
Of dirty socks, sweaty shirts,
Damp bathing suits, strange experiments
In Kirkland water bottles, calcified pebbles
from the American River in Strawberry,
The old carpet blanketed with old Smokeys dog hair,
sand from the park, dust from muddy shoes
Im hypnotized by the sounds of fat mouse
Spinning on her wheel, cht, cht, cht, cht, cht
Sweet , brown Furry, who first peeked
Up at me from inside a paper bag,
Our accidental pet
He begged me not to feed to
The snake, Sylvie, shiny, slithering
Golden Goddess of muscle and circles
She brings me peace from an
odorless, soundless place,
Somehow, bewitched kin
Speaking to my deepest
Wish, to sleep off this big meal 08/16/2006 Author's Note: RIP, FURRY! You live in our hearts, always, and in our backyard, in the pet graveyard :( where Jordan and I visit you. We miss your squeaky breaths, the way you squinted your eyes when we petted you, and most of all, how cute you were after a bath, teeny tiny shivers with matted fur!! We love you, Fur Fur Fur!!!!!

My first memoir piece in a long time...We are all upside down, especially the dog! Room by room, our 22 year old carpets been ripped up, and this great gal has been refinishing the gorgeous, 50 year old red oak underneath....this week, its the master bedroom. The bed, and all the other furniture, is in the living room, where my kids watch tv while I take my daily catnap with the little critters in the last room that is just NOT cleanI now find the carpet to be a disgusting, mold filled allergy hell, and Ive never slept better since its been gonebut, in my sons room, it doesnt bother me when Im ready for my cave time the boy stuff. The animals. Its all goodwere even talking about getting a pair of box turtles.

Posted by Charlie Morgan on 08/16/06 at 01:56 PM ...leslie, this is gracious...a serious entity of poetics is cathing that indescribable "moment" in detail and you did this extremely well in this lil' ditty, i was entranced being your kid, being you, being a 'janitor' as all us parent's are at some time and yet savoring the smells from our "cave"...lovely moment in time...peace, chaz |

Posted by Dave Fitzgerald on 08/17/06 at 12:23 AM This is cosy stuff... took me back to the box bedroom I had as a kid... had to shake myself, the music took me by surprise :D |
Posted by Christel Crews on 08/17/06 at 01:34 AM such beautiful descriptions- you place the reader directly into the room, including not only the visual but the internal- beautiful! |
Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 08/17/06 at 03:27 AM Wonderful world of yours you've described. This takes me back to bunk bed days of my kids very clearly. There is nothing quite like a kid's room, full of all the treasures and sensory delights. I also really enjoyed your author's notes. |

Posted by Michelle Angelini on 08/19/06 at 08:28 PM A slice of homey life that just made me feel good. I love the little images in each stanza - the memories mixed with each aspect of life. Taken together they make up something unforgettable.

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 08/21/06 at 04:34 PM The Cave...I like that. It's neat how families use pet names for things that go on in their households. Thanks for the colorful glimpse Leslie into your personal space. :o) |
