Prologue -- The Night Before

by Leslie Ann Eisenberg

Summer, “sheep storms” faded
Blackest sky far from mainland light
ablaze with bright and focused stars
The annual throngs disembark
from ferries in earnest flip-flops,
fill rented pantries with sundries,
free window panes from salted board

Tomorrow is Sunday
The package stores will all be closed
Middle aged women with jeweled,
parchment fingers and taut smiles will
adorn starched white hats to hide their
freckled, un-ironed skin
Tend to tamed gardens,
Perhaps attend a church service

While college students clad in string
bikinis and long shorts screech by!
on mopeds, or stand for not too long
on hot, unpainted roads in bare feet,
hitching a ride to ‘Sconset beach,
to meet America’s first sunset,
first bonfire, first almost love
On Nantucket, this is where it begins

Quite the visual piece. As the title suggests, would make a worthy opening poem to a series, or even a short story or novel.

What a prologue! Your imagery is exquisite and would definitely leave any reader (like this one) thirsting for more.

I like the scene you portray here with insight into our culture, and of age. A care-free feel to the style and word usage. I enjoyed the read :)

This evocative piece places all those yesterdays in a line-up and I still can't pick the culprit cuz they all run together in a series of could have beens. I like your style, Leslie. pe4ce...

yeah. i just discovered your stuff today. it makes me remember why i started writing to begin with: the pure love of the craft/of bleeding out. solid images and awesome wording. i had forgotten how great it could be.

it is amazing, all the words that can occur to us to speak or sing or quill upon hushabye pads when we haven or open our eyes to their possiblity.
