City Symbiosis

by David Hill

Buses expel and taxis rust rattle,
a siren swirls in the funnel of noise
that flows like fluid to the hollows
and pours back misshapen and dense.

Beside the terminal,
I watch The Dancing Man
convulse as though shot,
drop to a knee, shake it off,
rise and writhe up the block
in blazing red shoes.

So focused, the shepherd dog never flinches
and the blind Pretzel Man nods and smiles.

Crystalline swipes down his sleeve,
but carefully, so very carefully
he picks each brown twist with silver tongs
and tucks them in wax paper wrapping,
I touch his fat fingered hand and
his lolling tongue forms “thank you.”

In Grace Park, through skim,
the sun's crinkled eye squints
on a gasping photosynthesis.
Each day,
I break pretzels in pigeon bites
or bury them deep in the trash bin.

The first stanza brings the city scene alive to both my eyes and ears. I can hear that funneling noise echo back and forth. The Dancing Man feels almost Timothy Burton-like in his blazing red shoes. The Pretzel Man I see clearly and I have to admire his tenacity, his patient dog, and your kindness each day toward him. This is a moving scene.

I love the alliteration in this piece. It's like a silent film and you've brought it to full color and life wonderfully.

Whether straight or twisted you have certainly captured the essence of living in the moment. Salty stuff, David. Congratulations on becoming The Synergistic Poet Of The Day.

" ... vivid pictures," Maria said. Yes, it's so true. I was there walking along beside you, seeing, tasting, smelling, hearing, touching. All my senses were affected. This was a truly good pick for POTD. Congratulations to you.
