Rudy’s HEART

by Rula Shin

What is a Heart?
The heart is a muscle
Not the largest, but whose
Endurance surpasses all

Pumping the blood
Every moment it labors
For as the "blood is the
Life of the flesh," so
The flesh of the heart
Gives life to the blood

When I SEE you
I don't see this machine
Nor the persistence of the
Muscle, struggling to endure
Nor do I perceive the time
That with softening eyes
You claim is passing by

When I SEE you
I see nothing mechanical
Toiling to sustain the structure
Not the nuts, nor the bolts
Nor the certain boundaries of
That central beating pump

No Daddy,
Call me blind to these devices
For when my eyes walk deep within
Meeting in our private room, eternal
All I SEE is YOU, MY HEART
Devoid of any boundaries, FREE
Ever reaching, caressing me

I agree with Lori. The heart is so much more than a muscle, which you so eloquently expressed in this piece. Wonderful write as usual Rula!

This has me appreciating more - these unSEEable mechanisms that sustain my loved ones lifes - that in turn sustain what I am able to SEE in them. (paradoxy reader, am I this morning? hahaha)
I understand this poem especially now, for my mind is seeing a close friend, even though she is not "here" on this "plain".
Beautifuland embracing, this poem!

A pre Father's day poem? I can appreciate the sentiment Rula, and without that last stanza, the poem becomes universal. :o)

Wow! Can fathers really be 'seen' this way? I believe I'd like to believe that, and I do believe this :)

Love is ONE, depending upon the image and association with the person we love. The heart doesn’t just pump blood, it also reminds you of the life it offers you in the role of the carrier of life, beating from moment to moment. And life, as human beings, we live and share with the persons we love, creating our own private worlds within this world, where our heart keeps on singing this song of love incessantly.
This song of love of yours I hear on two levels, on the physical plane as well beneath the surface, at a level where heart transmits and trans receives communications of care and affection, unsaid.
Words are the creation of intellect and they hardly communicate. ‘Feelings’ are the sense of ‘heart’ that never fail to communicate directly, first hand. This poem, on this level, communicates feelings directly experienced and first hand. Words here are just carriers of these feelings, these beautiful vibrations your heart is beating for your Dad, who seems so very dear to you. And well, you have acknowledged this very feeling with every beat of your heart in rhythm.
Wise men believe in the paths that have a heart. Mystics believe that the seat of the soul is where the heart is. Yes, I do believe that when it’s not an intellectual evaluation of a situation, but love and beauty, it’s the ‘heart’ where the seat is, beyond words, in the domain of pure feelings from where the essence of this poem emerged. Yes, the heart is a muscle, but the HEART is beyond these muscles where….
‘when my eyes walk deep within Ever meeting in our private room All I SEE is YOU, MY HEART Devoid of any boundaries, FREE Eternally reaching out, caressing me.”
Despite the cycle of life and death, there are things that never die. They remain eternally present. The associations of true LOVE. The HEART, in this sense, never dies. It keeps on beating beyond the realm of this physical world.

Rula, I feel that a true heart is the link between gratitude and spirituality. It is a place to treasure and a place to remain. An enjoyable read, thank you.

i saw heart today. peeking out of the warmth of a friend. this did my heart good. what is a heart? i thought of Rudy's HEART poem. i thought of the warmth that exudes from beautiful people who've only chosen to be heartful. and you are one who I thought of. this is enough to carry me through ~ plenty to carry any humane through. that...is a heart visible to the spirit. heartfelt twink of my eye tonight, sweet poet. you make a difference in my life. Love, Jill

this poem has beauty beating through its veins and it pumps it to my soul, soothing and breathing essences into its skies and filling in all the potholes that therein that soul existed, for the heavy traffic that o'er its roads wandered more than was necessary. and your poems can wander o'er my soul anytime, Rula.

this poem breaks my heart. for so many reasons. the heart is definitely more than just a muscle. this poem proves it.
