Grand Rabbit's Easter Day

by Mary Ellen Smith

Her rabbit eyes are wise and warm
The color of spun honey
And it has been so many years
Since she has been a bunny
But still her hop is full of fun
For those who come to call
She is the Grand Rabbit you see,
To bunnies one and all.

Her hutch is covered by a vine
That blooms fragrant in the spring.
A little picket fence and gate
A squeaky little thing.
Her kitchen always smells so good
Of carrot cake and more,
Another reason everybunny
Hops up to her door.

At Easter time she gathers eggs
From near and faraway.
She mixes dyes and dips the eggs
All for Easter day.
When all the little bunnies
In Springtime’s finest dress,
Come gather here at Grand Rabbit’s
To be her Easter guests.

With woven baskets on their arms
The bunnies run around.
Peeking here and peeking there
The colored eggs are found.
Some are found in tree limbs
Some in grasses green,
Some are found under the blooms
And some there inbetween.

Then after bites of carrot cake
And scones made out of kale
She sits them down on feathered seats
To read to them a tale.
A story bout a little hare
Who bragged that he was fast
And a tortoise friend who when he raced
Always came in last.

The little bunny’s ears are raised
Listening to the story read
And tho they wish the hare to win
Cheer the tortoise on instead.
Oh what a fine and sunny day
As the bunny’s sip their tea
Sitting there at Grand Rabbit’s feet
Under her old oak tree.

This grown child loves this tale! The story within the story at the end is terrific with a twist where bunnies root for the tortoise. "Grand Rabbit" rolls off the tongue as well.
