The Girl Who Loves Rainbows

by Mary Ellen Smith

Who broke the rainbow?

Was all she could say

after the rain

on that first sunny day.

Who broke the rainbow?

she said as she sighed.

Who broke the rainbow?

Her eyes open wide.

For there on the streets

bits of rainbow were seen

bright splashes of red

purple, yellow and green.

Puddles of color

that fell from the sky

well at first she was startled

and wanted to cry.

But she jumped in a puddle

of sapphire blue

then with two feet she skipped over

the tangerine too!

She mixed up the colors

new shades she was making

with every skipped step

every jump she was taking.

She made green when she mixed up

the yellow and blue

then mixed up some violet

with red and blue too.

Finger painting her world

she painted all day

before the rain clouds came back

and washed it away.

She woke up in the morning

Oh! it was only a dream

and the rainbow will be back

with the days first sunbeam.

God sends the rainbow

as a promise to all

and believing His word

she knew it never would fall.

So she got out her colors

her crayons, pens and such

and drew more of the rainbows

that she loved so much.

Hi Mary Ellen. Reminds me a bit of Shel S., wouldn't the illustrations be grand? Great poem! Thanks.

This is adorable and yes...this would be fabulous for a children's book, but it would also be awesome for an adult's book, too =)
