Astray by David R Spellman
Its been bloodied before
that white-washed walk
that cobble-stoned street
caulked by the sweat of sinners
cleansed by the sacrifice of martyrs
swept fresh for yet another day
another way,
and others say
what the fuck is going on?
You say your God
I say, "Oh mine!"
but who in the hell
made it so divided
and parted these ways
led us down these paths so
mis-directed only to lead
back to nowhere
back to where?
Fools follow paths
without knowing why
they’re led a long way
before ever finding the fact
they’ve lost the direction
seeking nothing more
but to be led
back to where
they never intended to be.

Powerful stuff, David, and surely tragic. Can't help but take a deep breath for a heavy sigh after reading and "thinking" about this one.

Posted by Julie Adams on 03/07/06 at 02:10 PM I love the ideas encased in this poem...Astray is an eloquent title for the topic and I really felt concrete depth in stanza 1, very powerful and visual...the second and third stanzas seems to be doing exactly what the poem speaks of, following the path of the piece...as we read we follow your poem to its circular end, left wondering why does religion divide us...thank you! all the best, jewels |
