Old Love

by Glenn Currier

I remember when our love was new
violets opened in our morning dew
swiftest channels merged into the glade
hearts were pounding in a serenade.

Imperfection barely in our sight
in the passion of our wedding night
hopes were strewn upon the bedroom floor
like daisy petals in a flower store.

When December's silver wedding ring
spiraled in a preternatural spring
glistening in her brown eyes and beyond
double helix of our sacred bond.

Decades waved and smiled and shed sweet tears
encountered seeds of souls beyond our fears
made a thousand choices to remain
felt her spirit coursing in my veins.

Traveling deserts singing through the droughts
mountains, music, churches and our doubts
mornings evenings we are arm in arm
hurting healing helping through the harm.

I found this woman walking on a road
offered her my heart to share my load
saw a hawk and heard a cooing dove
kissed her lips and tasted our old love.
