Winter's Hush by Kristina WoodhillSet aside the Christmas rush
Dim your lights to low
Step into the winter'Â’s hush
Blanketed by snow
Inhale crisp, cold, peaceful air
Watch the birds flit by
Cheerful though the trees are bare
They know where ripe seeds lie
Our corn stalks stand, salute the sun
For summer'Â’s hot, rich earth
Unpicked dried corn we partly husk
And leave for pheasants'Â’ search
Starlings swarm from neighbors'Â’ trees
No bugs to swoop and snatch
They find my husband'Â’s old wheat field
As one they land and scratch
In formal black and white attire
Atop the compost pile
The magpies hop and strut their stuff
And gossip all the while
The black-capped juncos make me smile
Those busy feathered puffs
Their beaks pick through our shredded straw
White snow now flecked with buff
This busy peaceful world outside
This purpose quiet yet firm
This winter'Â’s hush
With sunset'Â’s blush
Back drop for flying geese
And ducks
Fills up my heart – a natural rush
In backyard Idaho
