Intelligent Design

by Chris Sorrenti

the pressure is everywhere
relentless
we all can feel it
in the fiber of our souls
forces and events coming together
as predicted in the ancient texts
passed down to man
millennia ago

the superstorms
of earth sea and sky
growing in their fury
and we
someone’s pet science project
helpless in the wake of their mass destruction
roll along roll along
as the stressed and weary
we were meant to be
a test of spirit
to weed out the strong from the weak?

only six years left
till the end of the Mayan calendar
2012 some saying
a time of enlightenment will begin
the world as we knew it
never the same again
for now seven years of tribulation
last year begun

as talk grows of full disclosure
from authoritative voices
possibly even in 2006
the dark camp at NASA
slowly losing the battle
against more moderate interpretations
of the continuous monitoring
by several variety of aliens
one which may very well have
planted the seed of our species

but if God didn’t create us
and the alien did
who then created the alien?
and why must there be Armageddon?
if only to wipe the slate
of the buildup of sin

as once again Persia Iran
unsheathes its sword
now nuclear tipped
seeks wiping Israel
from the face of the Earth
and we the meek pure in heart
shake our heads at the madness
knowing that such a fool venture
has never worked before
and probably never will

wars and rumors of wars
these are indeed the end times
though haven’t they always been?
in destiny
and the face of the universe
our short history on this planet
merely a precursor
for what lies ahead

the late night shows have sown new art here. I had drafted one of a similar vein but totally different subject matter really, and different degree of build up, lately too. One of your longer poems, and I like to see those, as I find they give you and the reader the chance to really dig deeper into the psyche, especially on this type of piece, and it works well for this type. Well done.

Quite an interesting view of Scripture and other ancient documents. Surely Revelation can be seen to be unfolding humanity reaches its destination. For the Christian, Christ's return is imminent as it has always been. What seems to be the signs of the time keep the Christian looking up, full of anticipation and hope. Chris, you've encapsulated the message engagingly.

Oh, yes Chris. The best of times, the worst of times...and all of them at once. A great collective of thought here, vivid.

Again I find myself... is it a same-generation phenomenon?... wondering how you so craftfully express that which stays stuck in my gut unable to make itself known. Thanks for bringing it together with your usual courage and insight, Chris. Great poem.

A fascinating wind through the... prophecies, pronouncements... we've heard, even THOUGHT at one point or another. Very thought-provoking.

Shuddering to read, as I find my head nodding in agreement.
On the poem - I'm brought to admiring at the way you're words flow, even as you're touching upon so many complexities, everything the way you lay it out - registers smoothly. Writers everywhere long for your dexterity. (Well,...I do.)

"why must there be Armageddon?" It's not really a question is it? It implies that Armageddon is a contrived idea of those wishing to control and propagate fear, chaos and misinformation. Even if aliens played a role in the evolutionary propagation of human genetics and the species...are we ready to accept such truths? Or shall we remain blind to such truths overall? Also, what "sin" are you referring to? Nice work! Thanks for sharing and enlightening the Great Mind.

Brilliant, as always.
