Live Dreaming

by Susan Q Tomas

As my eyes started rapidly moving under my closed eyelids
I visited the dreams and aspirations of my youth.
A business woman with big shoulders,
wearing Liz Claiborne suits, driving an Aston Martin.
Retiring to my high rise condo and sipping wine
while counting my money and entertaining friends.
With several handsome business men competing
to take me out on for a night on the town.

The dousing reality is;
I am not ambitious, nor competitive, nor well bred, nor well schooled.
Nor attractive enough for several men of any degree to compete over me.

But then I woke to a dream. The sound of children laughing
a dog barking, a man cheering, excitement in the back yard.
I had fallen asleep in the comfy chair next to the Christmas tree.
I found my book fallen aside, The people who filled my heart, outside
in the back yard playing their own version of baseball that requires 3 people and one dog.
I got up, brewed some tea, and put the roast in the oven.
I woke to a dream. It wasn't exactly what I dreamed of for my life.
No, my life was even better.

Author's Note: If you can think of a better title, let me know. I have been married 12 years and have 2 kids. (no dog, but I think it completes the family package) I never dreamed of being a little homemaker in the suburbs. But now that I am, I think my life is better than what I had planned.

Yes, there are many tempting parking spaces on the road to success, but I think personal satisfaction is the most important ingredient of true success. Here's to yours!

Susan, I really prefer your "living" dream, but then I'm a sucker for kids in the backyard and sitting with a book at Christmas time.

This is vividly told, and a finely crafted truthful "waking dream"! "Life dreaming" like day dreaming...but more all encompassing...more lasting...dreams surprise us, but to say "better than I dreamed for" is such a positive, realistic and insightful state of mind and life!

This can be repeated in life by most of us out there, the dream vs reality and the reality is even better. It is all a matter of perspective. Great read and worthy of Poem of the day!
