I'm On My Way Home

by Hartwell Davis

I’m on my way home
Home from the bloody war
That leaves within my heart a scar
I carry with me the awful sight
Of men that are dead and fear of night
But I’m on my way home.

I’m on my way home.
A year I’ve spent in constant hell
Hearing all the anguished yells
Of men in painful agony
The reason is a mystery
But I’m on my way home.

I’m on my way home.
I carry all the memories
Of battle wounds and dread disease
Of jungle rot and stanching death
The war is a bit of Satan’s breath
But I’m on my way home.

I’m on my way home.
And now I’m going to see the land
Calling me on every hand
To feel the kisses of my wife
Thank God he left me with my life
Now I’m on my way home.

Oh this pulls at the heartstrings so! And a timely read for soldiers on their way home now as well...
