you're not the only one

by Elizabeth Jill

you're not the only one
whom this has happened to;
things like contempt and spite
ne'er come out of the blue.
a poison snake that's shed its skin
just grows another one,
and it will bite again.

if I were you, 'twould lock my door
and keep my toes up off the floor;
I'd lock my thoughts inside a book
and never take another look.

you're not the only one
who weeps alone;
there're more of us,
and we have formed a stone.
one day we'll lift it
up out of the blue
and fling it at the wolf,
like shepherds do.

Ack, you found my nutshell again! "a poison snake that's shed its skin just grows another one, and it will bite again." ... yes, that's it exactly. You have written this so well, from a child's point of view, but in an adult world. I get it, it like it, and I have, flung "it at the wolf, like shepherds do." Super poem!

I don't know how I missed this gem "a poison snake that's shed its skin just grows another one, and it will bite again." Loved that line. It says so much. Excellent read!

Always with poetic meaning Elizabeth, I especially enjoyed that last stanza, particularly the last four lines. This gives one the feeling of comfort in affinity with others. This is the attitude one should take, the snake will always bite, but your LIFE will never be at stake if you SEE the snake for what it is, because then you know how to neutralize the effect of its venom.

Affinity is what matters and matters being aware of snakes and wolves. Awareness is a weapon which will keep the snakes and wolves at bay.

well I just love this...you have a way of bringing the reader into a different light.

Immaculate - but can I say...'Out of the blue', resplendent in connotation, would be a worthy, éhcilc-gnirut title?

Wonderful! This poem speaks so well of the problems that are common to all of us. Misery may love company, but when someone is in it, there's a gulf a mile wide around us. Very compassionate, Jill.

the muse would say to sheperd, hey shep, you're not the only one savors meat and as much as you like to put your hooks in the lamb yourself, a wolf has got to eat too! or does a wolf err in saying so? no? so why toss stones? Jill this poem is wonderfully musical and alive in the valley of my chin and in the balls of my feet.

That last verse...

Your use of symbolism is everything poetic, Jill. And here I though the proverbial closet was bare.
