Tea Time

by Maureen Glaude

Despite our diligence
storing foodstuffs away
overnight at the campsite,
my daughter-in-law slipped up
one time.

The picnic table cover
grill and cookers scrubbed
painstakingly, even bar soap
tucked indoors,
(apparently the raccoons like
cleanliness products),
we neglected only
our two small, sealed tins
of tea sachets,
in two varieties,
(hers the herbal strawberry,
mine the orange pekoe,
both caffeine-free),
not believing them to be
a wildlife visitor's temptation.

Come morning, we discovered
the tell-tale signs
after sounds of activity
in the middle of the night.

Tea grains speckled
our table, tins lying
wide open and flipped over.

Several loose sachets were stained
deep pink now -
perhaps from sampling,
and clear evidence left
of a preference
for the strawberry herbal!
Who knew?

The nimble-fingered coons
better at lid removal
than some of we humans,
must have enjoyed
their midnight
tea party!

Quite humorous, I can easily picture it. Reminds me of that old Wonderful World of Disney movie where a couple of prairie dogs or some similar rodents had their way with a woodsman's cabin when he was away.

:) Such fun! In the UK we have different problems with camping - sheep that are bold enough to explore the contents of your rucksack, geese that want to come in the tent, even one time a duck that felt the tent was good place to sleep! Interesting choice of tea for them. Perhaps it was less bitter/more sweet?

I love this..you hosted a midnight tea party and didn't even know it! What a wonderful vivid picture your words put into my head.

They are just mischievous and wanted to teach you a lesson, not prepared I am sure, for the classy campers. Brought back memories of similar encounters but I lost hamburger meat and all kinds of stuff in an plastic cooler we left out. Good story and fun to read.

Having a little bandit for tea is much better than a bear.....Charlie
