dream lover by Charlie Morganol' bobby darin sang for a dream lover
and until then he'd just dream again, alone.
i know he must have slept forever
because the only true love is to be dreamed.
not lived.
the idea, made real bursts the second a human touches it,
like a too-tight balloon, it can't be handled roughly.
only in your dreams does she want you,
and only in her dreams are you the sycopantish imp.
otherwise, awake and living we slaughter true love
with a swathing slice of narcissism and solipsism.
and dry the remains on a bus ride to the Hollywoods
of our hearts and souls in mimikery of the good life.
each one of us crying to Charon and not wanting
the boat-ride of normalcy to be our fare.
i'm special, we wail, and other ears shun the cry
as like wolves howl at the moon just for being itself.

Posted by Kyle Anne Kish on 08/01/05 at 05:34 PM Wow, Charlie, the way you wove Bobby Darin and his song into this poem is pure creativity. "i know he must have slept forever
because the only true love is to be dreamed." ... very interesting thought here and, your last two lines, what a punch in the gut. Ahh, but we've all gotta dream, don't we? Super read. |
Posted by Glenn Currier on 08/05/05 at 04:32 PM Oh you rascal... you pop my baloon... make my voice foolish with its hilium... blow in my face the truth I would rather not see. What makes you such a great writer of poems and novels is that you see and speak the truth and refuse to adorn it with crepe paper, sequins, or silk, and you trust us to be able to handle it. On the other hand, I hear a dreamer underneath this and love him. ... Jus got the movie "Beyond the Sea" in the mail... what a coincidence reading your poem with a bow to Darin. Dream lover! |
