Familiar Territory

by Chris Sorrenti

we seek familiar territory
those ever lasting friendships
and though not without weakness

in their various imperfections
reassurance still
in not having to deal with alone

sacrifice in maintaining the bonds surely
and yet what in this world
is not without penance?

for some of us there is no question
as to the lasting of the conversation
fragmented as it may be

over months and miles
we conjure visions of union with those
held in the highest esteem

to offer support without asking
one another’s defeats to grieve
as victories combined enrich us

to be patient for the next sharing
of familiar territory celebrated
with a ten year old bottle of wine

Excellent and so true. I'll drink to that, too, but probably with a 10-day old bottle of Martinelli's Sparkling Grape Juice. ;-)

Yes indeed we all seek that 'familiar territory' between us, the feeling of belonging an essential human need. I think this is a wonderful pice you have written and so accurate especially in this world of internet. Great write :-)

Ah, Chris, you pluck the heartstrings of alone and alone and alone we will e'er be, and in that appraisal there is ne'er glee but it is truth and so we continue to strum up mirages of companies, battlements of friends that never arrive around the bend, but mirages lend themselves to illusion of friends but aloness mere and wonderful, clear and unadulterated notion of alone plays us for keeps. alone we may be but we will keep company with this poem for a bit as we sit before the computer and weep.

"Drinking" a toat to friendship I think! May not always be the most exciting but the most secure. And always important!
