Grand Old Dame

by Maureen Glaude

Here you are again
still standing strong
grand old dame
gatekeeper of Island Park Drive

green and vibrant
save for the scant rust patches,
hostess of soft sweet
aromatic needles
you extend your arms to trap the gold
of afternoon sunlight
as you have all these years,
serve harbour from the heavy rains
to passersby,
playground to the children
a single straight rope tethered to
your lowest limb

a turn onto your path
always tempts me to stop, reach up
and touch your foliage
hear your whispers of long witness
to all that has passed by here

at rush hour
the roadway of traffic running by you
en route between two provinces,
vibrates with heaviness,
bold velocity,
but you thrive unshaken

to stand as shady sentry
for yet another season
on Island Park Drive

Mo, I had such a sense of peace when I read this. I have landmarks like that, filled with meaning and sentiment. It's been too long since I read one of your poems. Excellent work!

I've never heard a tree descibed with such respect and reverence. Nice one Maureen. I must see it sometime, as you've definitely sparked my curiosity.

Ah, this is so touching to me. I love this almost intimate account of your interaction with this tree-creature. Your reverence and gratitude saturate your words and my heart. Brilliant!

I was just reading Joyce Kilmer's 'Trees'and this tucks perfectly into that same peaceful sense of 'nature as truth.' JD's recent post has that same feel as well as a narrative that I'm working on, soon to be posted, which makes me marvel at how various ideas along a like theme will come together to stir the imagination. Your imagery just brought that into focus. - Beautiful and refreshing to the senses - Thanks, Maureen! - RCat
