While Waiting For The Messiah

by Chris Sorrenti

there are lesser Gods to worship
or at least look up to in reverence
decked out in what $2.3 million can buy
with feet still planted on terra firma
before ascending into the ether

amid this third week of championships
the multitudes eagerly anticipate
the return of Ken Jennings
to see if he still has the miracle touch
to turn entire categories of answers
into winning questions of bread and wine
for millions of hungry viewers
sweep away the competition two by two
with encyclopedic finesse
in a steady stream of Daily Doubles

as father and holy ghost
Alex Trebek and NBC
still smile their goodness upon him
or perhaps sadly as history recalls
only to be crucified in Final Jeopardy

a unique take on spirituality here. Fun and a real slice of everyday life.

...chris, i'm with maureen on this one...such a good VERY SERIOUS tongue-in-cheek to all us on this orb...we're soooo worried about a 3-day weekend, yet totally unappreciable for a 20,000 day life here on Earth...loved it!, been missing your posts...peace, chaz

You've insightfully pictured the gross materialism of this day. There is an irreverence in natural man that slanders God to the point of blasphemy. Scary really!

Quite the interesting twists of analogy and metaphor in this social commentary. Your own keen and unique perspective shines through once again!

Great Insightful Poems for 1000, Alex..and the answer is already obvious! Good one Chris..and the topic sublimely perfect!

I really like how you weave the divine with well, the game of jeopardy.. :) Very clever take on this idea. Great work..

It's interesting to note that the fallen gods of the new millenium have an after life hawking products on TV...It makes me wonder what those other spiritual icons of yore might have contracted to pitch?...I'll let you use your vivid imagination to speculate. - Well done Mr. S., most enjoyable and thought provoking - RCat (I'll take 'Big Breasted Women' for $500..oh look, it's a 'Daily Double,' how fitting!)(grin)

*claps* Chris you are the man! This piece is awesome, and your number one! I hope you stay there!

Who would have thought that a game show could be a vehicle for commentary on life, death, and resurrection? Only a poet such as you, Chris. Tasty irony here.

When I used to watch Jeopardy, I'd snap off the answers and think, gee, I can do better than that man or woman. HA! I think that's what Ken Jennings thought, too. Good tongue-in-cheek look at "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat"!
