Is it the Rose? by Mary Ellen Smith
Is it the rose perhaps that scents a room
That drives away some awful gloom?
Her face, a blush with shy repose.
Is it the rose?
Does the bud keep count ten, eleven, twelve.
Or cling to the thorn fore the delve?
Beribboned now within breaths pose,
Is it the rose?
Sweetly, each one to her own task gives
Fragrance that in her petals lives.
Is love the purpose that she grows?
Is it the rose?
Tis enough then that the gardeners sheaf
Is bound for love, regret or grief?
Some noble cause is all he knows.
It is the rose.

Posted by Glenn Currier on 01/14/05 at 04:36 AM I like the last verse the best... the way you humanize and make us curious about that gardener. Well done, indeed. |

Posted by Alison McKenzie on 01/19/05 at 12:21 AM I remember a song I performed at a competition once, "The Bird and The Rose", and it was not NEARLY as lovely as this. |
