Color Me

by Rula Shin

inside the lines or out
i don't mind
as long as your fingers
compose their utmost

itÂ’s been centuries that I gave up
my CrayolaÂ’s for the darker ink
of a gritty miner

iÂ’ve come back now to tell you
that IÂ’m tired of these pits
though aware that darkness
leads to light

mines are so deep when
holding priceless treasures
but no happiness awaits me there
for what is a distance traveled without a companion
but a subjective truth that never leaves its grave?

come now and let me share
some secrets with you
better yet, why not BE our
very own secret to share and treasure?

color me from without, color me from within
try not to be too precise my dear
for nothing is more beautiful
nor anything as pleasing to my senses
than the boundless texture of your colors

Author's Note: A piece I wrote that was visualized by my good friend Ashok Sharda as his comment to me....I find that the texture he created with such few colors expands vibrantly into a multitude of spectrums...deep into the dimension I wish to communicate in the verbal format. That is to say, no moment, whether beaten or untouched, is ever as beautiful without the presence of a devoted love with whom to traverse on this pathless path...

I love the last stanza very much. For nothing is more beautiful Nor anything as pleasing to my senses Than the boundless texture of your colors As a child, I have never been able to color within the line...Guess things have not changed now...

I have this special feeling in my heart for poets who fear not their colors will bleed, will exceed the boundaries and you dear Rula are one.

beautiful stuff. especially 'what is a distance traveled without a companion / but a subjective truth that never leaves its grave?' and the bit after it. it almost makes being a secret sound appealing.

Pretty good poem from strong, original lines throughout this Rula. Romance, both dark and colorful.

the pacing and images are great, but i must agree with gabriel that the voice is what makes the piece, and it STAYS strong in every verse, which is a testament to your growth as an artist. "i've come back now to tell you that I’m tired of these pits though aware that darkness leads to light mines are so deep when holding priceless treasures but no happiness awaits me there for what is a distance traveled without a companion but a subjective truth that never leaves its grave?"...so much is said in these two stanzas, and perhaps it could be a little tighter, but as is, it is very moving, and so is the end, to compare the bloom of lovers/friends to the joy of coloring the page.

Rula, I'm just mesmerized by the words of your poem. My favorite line - "color me from without, color me from within," because it reminds me of the Chicago song, "Color My World." I've put it on my favorites list. How romantic!

‘color me from without, color me from within…… these lines emit beautiful vibrations of their own in the wake of these lines-‘why not BE our very own secret to share and treasure'. You seem to have found the path and a fellow traveler on this very evolutionary path. What you seem to be seeking is what you seem to be transmitting. Yes, those refined and positive impressions which imbue the fellow travelers with this drive making this journey beautiful. Well, this is what I saw and based my drawing on.All the best.
