Perfect Family

by S. Pelham Flood

Thrown into my world
upside down,
catastrophe has no use of
metaphor.
Her dreams are slashed
and forgotten as the second offspring’s
closet door
splinters into dust.

Confined within her mind
are the restricting labels
of normality.
Solid foundations of upcoming
manic depression
root themselves in her
self-revolving world;
manifesting in the minds
of her children.

Perfection is the end
and also the beginning
in her need
to conform to standard-
loving society.
But her kids will undo
her–dissecting every
wish and prayer. Then
when she’s old
and decrepit, lost and

broken, her ignorance
will come loose and
her eyes reopened
upon the legal
marriage ceremonies of her
pride-satisfied
children.

Steven, your words kept me reading. The last two stanzas left me hungry to "fix" so many "broken" people that would often be better off accepted as they are. There are such defined lines between what is acceptable and what isn't in our society. However, you have demonstrated the misery factor that clings heavily to the mentally ill and their families with much needed candor. Thank you.
