Blood and Feathers

by Max Bouillet

Wet feathers flop about
on cotton clouds
as newborn angels
unravel spindly wings.

Soon they will be
dropped from
their heavenly nest
and plummet earthward.

Should they have faith and take flight
they are allowed to serve god.

Should they doubt,
their wings are ripped
from the root and they
fall into a human’s womb.

Drowning in flesh,
they have bittersweet dreams
of god, an insatiable desire to fly,
and an intense fear of falling.

and thus, with those plucked feathers, we come decidedly to our quills and in addition with the dark stuff to write this enchantment.

i relate this to my life and situation, which you know much about ... and i have that desire to fly ... and yes, i also have the fear ... thank you for putting it in perspective for me.

i don't know what to say except for this is awesome- all i could do was stare at the last 2 lines for a couple minutes while it all sank in! very nice job -patti

I think everyone can relate to at least one of those feelings in the last stanza, if not all, and that makes this a piece that will touch everyone in some way. Certainly did for me. I've always wanted to fly - a possible explanation here? Well-done all-around, in any case, because you not only touched, but provoked thought. Thanks.

Brilliant in the humor catagory as well as creativity.

What an insightful piece about human nature, and human follies. It starts in the womb, and trickles down until death.. our fear, and imperfections.. maybe thats why most hold on to this "god" character so tightly. Such a philosophically induced poem.. great read Max, once again.. you touch me.

You have presented this paradox so subtle and so poetically. The Nature in the form of our basic instinct, keeps us so earth bound where as our refined dreams keeps us levitating.

A fascinating concept! Quite imaginative! Illustrates the importance of both faith and obedience I think.

Wow, your poem reveals an extraordinary imagination and understanding of human/angel nature. This one definately goes on my favorites list, Max. This is almost too brilliant to read... but I can because there are still a few feathers in my blood. Thanks for this gem, my friend.

The last stanza answers questions I've had since I was very young, Max. Stunning work both ethereal and whimsical.

Another piece I missed whilst revisiting an eccentric intro version - how re-assuring to know that even immortals are only human...well, hypothetically :>
Immaculately conceived and sublimely delivered...

Congrats on POTD, Max - a worthy choice! This is a startling piece - the imagery is wonderful - what a concept of angels and mortals - definitely one for my Favorites! d:-)
