Yosemite Calling

by Michele Schottelkorb

Do you hear me?

Calling, along a quiet river

Polished rocks of ancient yesteryearsÂ…

Tradition speaks fondly here

Where giants sleep

And reckless abandon only stifles the ordinary.

Peer beyond a technological wonder~

Into a crevice you might find that

Water spiders tread lightly here

A dome split in half by a grandfather glacier,

Nestled amongst mountain peaks of old,

Beckons foreign travelers and retired folk as well.

I hear her energy race like a bear cub,

Feel his calm remembrance of childhood pleasuresÂ…

And I sit serenely on this valley floor.

Thousands of digital images no comparison for

NatureÂ’s beauty in raw real reality

Do you hear me, large granite man,

Tunnel of rock and brotherÂ’s three?

Trees that have witnessed the passing of time

And generations of humans united only by this delicate thread of ecosystem balance?

Do you hear meÂ… I hear You.

Having recently been to Yosemite for the second time I can certainly relate to this. In fact, I have a black and white photo taken from the Tunnel View by a friend who went there with me hanging right next to me at the desk I am now sitting at. You've captured so well many of its features and your lines that "Thousands of digital images no comparison for Nature’s beauty in raw real reality" is so true that no picture can aptly relate the absolute beauty of the place. This writing however has done an excellent job of conveying some of its wonder. Well done!

You have captured it well with your words Michele. We live about a two hour drive from Yosmite. It is truly an awesome place. A little farther south are the magnificent giant redwood trees, another one of mother natures treats to see....Charlie

You place the reader in the middle of your experience and allow them to borrow your senses in order to travel with you. Great read.

Like these majestic monoliths, your reflective poem is itself truly inspirational. It's lines like, 'I sit serenely on this valley floor' that make it hard to imagine the is no God, just by being a part of the landscape. I like your pantheistic approach to poetry here, Michelle...pe4ce

You seem to have almost become one with the yosemite vally. In order to SEE you experiencing the valley, I had to visit many sites seeing pictures while seeing you see.And you are so right, no amount of digital images can make you experience the raw reality of the natures beauty.

Oh how absolutely stunning Michele! The beauty of Yosemite is 3 Dimensional here for anyone who has never seen/experienced it (like me)...you have such an incredible ability to SHOW and not just TELL...soso good to see you back! :-)

What a wonderfully descriptive piece you have shared of a spectacular scene. You envoke true observation, with clarity and elegance. And also, welcome back :) I was wondering what happened to you..

Wow! Great writing Michele. One of the many places on this old Earth of ours I'd like to visit. Thanks for the wonderful poetic snapshot.

and to echo your words, Michele, I sit serenely on this valley floor and ponder the natural wonder which you have penned here.
