A View from the Fag-End

by Ashok Sharda

It's an endless path
narrowed down by counters,
shops, and the known

One has to manipulate his
way through these hurdles
and umpteen more

There's a big queue behind you,
there's a big queue preceeding you

The path seemed ascending
when I commenced my journey,
the path seems descending
when I have come to
the fag end of my being

Ashok, good to see another one from you and one I like. The last stanza is powerful - a unique way to think about life and death. Great Work!

usually that is how it works, you light the fag, which is your life, take the necessary drags and flick or watch the ash fall, or don't light the fag at all, saving it perhaps for another day or come that day and it be too windy and you can't light up your life because the match keeps going out. Thought provoking, Ashok.

Yes, thought provoking as usual! While descending life can still be challenging and exciting! Hope that Fag-end doesn't mean there are only ashes left!

Life is but a que - waiting to live, waiting to die and move on to the next step. Well put as per your usual.

For non-smokers, that would be the bare knuckle of life? A perspective on perspective, a parallel with something Susan Kasten posted recently. I like the use of 'counters', more an indictment than a mere shop fitting - so I guess there are layers of implication in the 'shops' reference...also the inverse relationship between the journey through a queue and that of 'life' - though I guess it depends on the nature of what lies at the conclusion - the end of a queue is merely indulgent or anticlimactic? :>

Hmmm...I would prefer to view life from the filter end myself. Liable to burn my lips the other way haha. Thought provoking cigarette break Ashok. Fag...now there's a word we don't here too often any more, at least here in Canada.
