La Cancion de Abuelita*

by Alex Smyth

When you open your eyes
The mist on the mountains
The deep purple mist that lies high in the mountains
Rolls down from the mountains
Floats down from the tops of the high purple mountains
To rest in your dark purple eyes

When softly you stir
In the still of the morning
Your first gentle stir in the grey of the morning
Is just the beginning of sweet ocean breezes
The sweet ocean breezes that float on the waters
That float on the waters to far away beaches
With butterfly kisses from you

When you cry out
Your cry is a summons
Your summons floats upwards to hearken the angels
You hearken the angles to fly to your cradle
On silk silent wings flying swift to your cradle
With blessings they sing you to sleep

Then when you're asleep
In my arms,
nietecito
The peace of your sleep makes your heart gently beat
The rhythm of peace in your heart ripples out
The ripples flow out with the peace in your heart
And the universe calms as you sleep

Dios bendiga mi nietecito

And the tears in my eyes for you, Grandmother Smyth, are pure and full of joy! Oh, precious Dakota... you are so loved!

A very beautiful lullaby. The flow is so natural and even. Excellent writing.

This is so sweet Alex...a magical incantation, crafted through it's imagery and repetitive reinforcement...Excellent!

The serenity of nature meshed with our relations to the small babies is pure magic in this verse. Great read that brings a warm fuzzy feeling to the heart and a small tear to the eye.

Just back again to fall in love with him all over again... through your eyes and words.

grandma, yours is a song forever young, in whose soft murmurings cradles are gently rocked and worlds.

Su poema es muy hermoso y habla de una relación especial. Yo nunca supe a mi abuela, ella murió cuando era muy joven. Gracias para un poema sensible empezar el día con. ¡Las felicitaciones en EN CONSERVA!

Oh, dear grandmother, what a wonderful poem about the new life in your world. The repetition in your poem captures the rhythm of the baby's peaceful heart as well as the symbiosis between you and your grandchild. I also like the connection with nature and the great metaphors. Lovely and well done poem, Alex.
