A Fear of Soft Shoulders

by Max Bouillet

She is carnivals
and calliope music.

The essence of warm lush eyes
that search for
a soft shoulder
and strong arms
--that leave in the morning
long before the shoulder grows cold
or the arms learn the art of smothering.

It's all about risk taking, isn't it Max? I've spent quite a while now reflecting on the implications you present in this one. Excellent and thoroughly enjoyable.

Ditto Kirk's comment on a poem about risk taking! Especially powerful last line!

You've hit a chord with this one, Max - I understand it all too well. A very well-put little verse.

Yikes. (Your poetry always makes me say that.) Jam packed with possibilities, and the ones that come to mind the quickest shock me the most. I love that what you write smacks me in the face.

Quite effective expression of love and not letting that closeness grow too strong before any negative reprocussions rear their ugly head.

i guess i just see the softer side. it's like holding in a breath before you take that final exhale. and when you do, when you let it out, the next time you breathe in seems so much deeper.

the warmth in this verse is cooked just so as the reader would like, as one would like an egg poached just so and thus you've poached this to sublimity.

I can easily see why this poem recieved such high praise from most of my favorite authors... It is sublime!
