Waking the Neighbors

by Meredith C Hartwell

In the last summer of cicadas
it began with the hum
of denim on denim
and zippers never pulled.
We clung to our roots,
let the sun dry us out,
cracked and peeled away,
dying cold.

It has been seven years
and the song returns
with a different tune
and the semi-growl of satisfaction
after our armor has fallen
in heaps to the ground,
happy little deaths.

I will measure my life in cicadas.
I will count my summers in song.
I will never die silent again.

the first stanza is particularly strong - the interplay of sounds is fantastic. the sexuality in the 'song' of whatever it is you're hearing should always be recorded : )

'I will count my summers in song. I will never die silent again.' This is so full of life. The impression is positive and can have a lasting effect in the form of an association ever vibrating with refined energies.
