Scenes from the Alphabet

by Maureen Glaude

A hands steepled in prayer,
thumbs meeting

B the McDonald’s arch turned sideways
and underscored

C a caricature’s nose, turned sideways

D a barebone sketch of a brass bed
turned sideways

E two spaces aligned in a parking lot
side-by-side

F a parking space on the right hand side
near the curb, followed by an open one
without a curb

G a gazebo with its entrance door open

H a ladder at first rung

I a pillar from The Temple of Athena

J a roman nose, with the imprint on the bridge
from too-tight glasses

K the less than sign in mathematics
planting number one a kiss

L half of a broken swing left hanging

M the last section on a royal's crown

N a skateboard jump
with two skinny skaters standing
on either side

O the expression on my face
ever since you left

- bird's eye view of a toilet bowl

- beacon light on a construction site marker

- what the sufferer yells out
when asked to rate pain, in the
hospital

- severe writer’s block

P a backwards rural mailbox

Q the letter O quitting the scene
and being tailed

R an earlobe afflicted with complications
from piercing

S a stylized breast escaping
from a bra with a sprung strap

T the receiver, not in use,
on an old-fashioned pedestal
telephone

U a shut eyelid

V a bird’s beak

W the lower parts of a ballerina’s feet
together on pointe

X two letter I’s in a duel

Y an empty martini glass, minus the
olive

Z the pattern on the ice
for a hockey drill

wheee, how fun! It made my mind flip flop around to see what you describe, then go Ahhhh! You do poetically for the alphabet what Ken Nordine did jazz-vocally for the color spectrum. See here.

Yes indeed...aerobics for the mind. At first I couldn't make heads or tails of this until I got to O, then the whOle exercise clicked in. Quite the innovative combination of concrete poetry and imagery. No doubt about it, one for the history books.

Oh what FUN! I love this. How DID I miss it before? (Found it in Don Campbell's favourites)

Very creative and imaginitive! I liked the part about rating the pain. I'm always asked that. I always say "On a scale of 1 to 19, my painlevel is 128". Good job- fun read!
