May 18th (The Anniversary) by J. P. DaviesAnniversaries pass unnoticed
when the calendar is blank.
May is filled with whiteness,
missing pen strokes
that never once came.
Hard to believe, two years,
passed so swiftly. Goodbye,
to the days when hearts were whole.
Scars will always remain now.
How much does one change?
between sixteen and eighteen.
Oh I'd say about two identities
and several major crises.
Time devoted has added up,
to a goddamn waste of my time.
I wish you all the happiness
that summer can bring.
I'll sit high above; waiting
to flip the calendar one more year.
Past an anniversary that was only
celebrated at the point of birth.
Twelve months until
I have to remember
how I never could make it
twelve months, before.

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 05/25/04 at 06:29 PM Yup...get used to it buddy, cause each year seems they pass faster and faster. My parents told me that even retirement doesn't slow down time. Scary. Thanks for the reminder J! |
Posted by Agnes Eva on 05/25/04 at 06:59 PM man, you're so right about 16-->18, just phenomenal changes.. it's a wonder we don't completely tear apart from all the chaos. |
Posted by Maureen Glaude on 05/25/04 at 07:44 PM as they fly by, sometimes we also lose touch with the early faces in our lives. I just saw my cousin again after 30 years at his parent's 60th anniversary party, and it seems such a shame so many years have come in between. Great poem. |
