Or Shall I Cook Breakfast?

by Alex Smyth

What price to buy a Warrior who stormed continents
On a steed of integrity, holding fast to courage?

What intrigue to lure an Ambassador of Irreverence
Whose thunderous brow scatters priests and princes?

What siren's song, knowing long ago
You chained yourself to the mast?

I have no snare for a wisdom surpassed this world.

So I will suplicate at dawn, when your eyes are soft.
Perhaps you will stay your armor,
pleased with a maternal sacrifice:
Ritually prepared and over easy; fatty pieces releasing a
Smoke offering as they crisp and curl; the firstfruits of the grain
Threshed and ground and reverently formed into golden honeycakes.

Then, Oh Grizzled Crown, Mighty One of Old, will you look on me with favour?
Will you share with me the secrets of Olympus?

Author's Note: Forgive me if this sounds pretentious, it is regarding a recent conversation......:o)

Ah yes - a green arrow at last! Well worth the wait! Quite a grandiose piece juxtaposed to its title. Clever irony. Nice one Alex :D

Many a great person knows not that they are great until offered breakfast by a person who thinks they are. Great verse filled with mythic images and underlying themes that keep the reader thinking.

Smyth... this made me bawl like a baby. Who knows the tenderness that can hide behind armour so thick that WORDS of love can't penetrate it, only acts. This is more than beautiful.

Not pretentious at all! It's so grand, and cute at the same time. An odd mix, but a good one in this case. ~Nita

I find in this, not the least pretense, Alex, rather it sings with a style that has sadly vanished from eyes longing its return.

You are probably talking of the human responses we all have within. Its just a question of evoking them. The greean arrow really looks beautiful against your name.

I love Max's comment. This is a delight of double entendre, dare I say. Witty and wonderful.

Indeed a fascinating look at Olympus! As was noted a different look at some myths.

Herculean poetry, Alex. I love the way this magnificent poem moves within itself revealing true indentity through the simplest of deeds by comparing past and presen. It also exploits the desire and committment known win wars and hearts alike. Impressive use of syntax here, to say the least. Pe4ce...
