A Nest

by Mary Ellen Smith

I watched a bluebird work today
Winging this and that a way.
She gathered string up for a nest
Taking no time at all for rest.
She even sang a little song
I found myself humming along.

I watched her weave a twig then two
Impressed by all she had to do.
Amazed at her bluebird technique
Using just her dainty beak.
Surprised at last, the day was fading
Engrossed was I in all her braiding.

A red silk ribbon from my hair
I took and tossed into the air
A wish perhaps and nothing more
To add a bit to her décor.
And in the dusk just where it fell
I couldn’t see, I couldn’t tell.

The night, now soft was ebbing thru
With twilight sounds and evening dew.
Sun setting for a needed rest
Cast one beam more into her nest
Just then I saw a splash of red.
My ribbon plaited overhead.

Whimsical, sentimental, bright with hope, beautifully portrayed!

As a life long (unofficial) bird watcher, I really enjoyed this lively highly visual piece Mary Ellen. Superb rhyming...not forced; quite lyricial.

So cool when we can add to the natural landscape with our simple offerings... and then to be able to write about it is such an added plus! An excellent moment so perfectly captured --- cudos to you for both!

Hi Mary Ellen, Yes, birds are something else to watch the way they buld their nest. Yes, they will use just about anything, even cig butts too.

Your ribbon added to the nest is really a charm... whether real or imaginary...it is real here, vividly expressed and dynamic. You've woven an enduring poem-nest... braided words with your red ribbon beautifully entwined!

Lyrical, that's what this poem is. You've created a picture of Spring's thrilling experiences. When I finished reading it I was so very spellbound.

it is a miracle, you have forged here, Mary Ellen. I never saw such a bird served better as a metaphor.
