happiness is a choice by Michele SchottelkorbA gargoyle once told me
{squatting in a dream}
to wish upon a falling star
and see what I could see
understanding comes in many forms
the legendary creature whispered
acceptance reins the world of joy:
happiness is a choice
and the choice comes from gratitude
so as I sat and pondered this
(some years since Lore had knocked on my head)
I got it!
With an open faced hand on the right
{yes, you have so many blessings}
I covered the insignificant fist on the left
{my precious little nothings}
and chose to be happy
and chose to be grateful
for every sacred breath
and though the neon world
persists mundanely on
a smile sits upon my face
Forevermore

Posted by Philip F De Pinto on 02/24/04 at 12:38 PM like you Michele I would ne'er forsake my gargoyles nor my shadows in that they are the very elements that make their seeming opposites, the light and angels worthwhile. I do enjoy my sunrises and yet I cherish too, gray days. It is difficult to retain a grin forevermore and there are times we must give our dourness equal time. Thank you for reminding me, Michele. |
Posted by Maureen Glaude on 02/24/04 at 12:38 PM I do believe you're right! I've considered it a job in a way, whereas we tend to grow up thinking it's a right and an automatic thing, it is something to work at to attain and to build from small miracles. Being happy with what is at hand, that should be treasured, is a gift. I never knew gargoyles fit in, but you do it beautifully. This reminded me of a taoist or Buddhist encounterwalk with a wise one. Thanks. |

Posted by Glenn Currier on 04/26/04 at 12:35 AM Yeah, it is as if the falling into our lives including our darkness/gargoyles is a necessary stage in finding joy. Thought-provoking poem, Michele. Well done. |
Posted by Michelle Angelini on 07/01/06 at 05:13 AM Michele, I love this and how you said it. Happiness comes not from the outside, but it's an inside job - I learned that many years ago.
