Erasing Me

by David R Spellman

Brush me off like
fallen wayward ash;
wipe the scene clean
of gentle fingertip touches and
aimless wandering footfalls
left with no echoing call
to relay their passing tread.
Purge the memory banks and
reformat the hard drive that
once showed a trail of tears
and laughter of a child lost
never to be found among
the forensic evidence of
life’s long pursuits. Sanitized
into remnants lacking proof
of substantial existence –
absent minded except
for trace imprints
of lingering memories,
randomly scattered dust
whisked upon the winds,
timeless hopes at last
fading unsettled still…

Brilliant, indeed, David. I have always liked your work, but now I am beginning to love it. This poem is my new favorite. Its soft, poignant images tread into the heart. Beautiful! Goes to my favorites list too.

I like this poem very much... the idea of erasure of a person is intriguing, and a little haunting.. I love the elements you used to weave your image.. Thank you...

'timeless hopes at last fading unsettled still…'they might fade owing to ever internalizing associations, but will they ever settle? Hopes remains alive even in the hopelessness. And the associations never die. Not even in dreams. Despite the matter of factly tone your approach is so very soft. Its a beautiful creative piece.

Akh, this struck me as tragic, sad.... that such erasure would be so clean and sure.

Timeless poetry, Dave. This marvelous piece leads me to feel that nothing ever fully retires, it just changes with time in an everlasting sense. Good stuff! Pe4ce...

As if written by a ghost, truly haunting, truly remarkable piece David. Wish I had written this, fellow spirit...glad you did!

The feeling that we can be eradicated from someone's member is perhaps the saddest fear and conviction to have. I think like Sarah MacLaughlin sings, and Tim McGraw, we all ask please to be remembered. Beautiful work.
