On Mother's Coffee Table

by Maureen Glaude

annual birth of blossoms
on Mother’s
coffee table
in her long
silent living room

Schlumbergera bridesil
the Christmas cactus
a Fuschia outburst
centres tinged yellow
streaked by white

some virgin buds keeping closed
until debut; long ballerina’s toes
on point

jagged leaves extend
from a tree-like umbrella
cascading in vertically siamese sequence
their emerald green
bordered by warning barbs

flamboyant petals
flourished by light
possessively guarded by
the prickles of foliage

annual brightness
on Mother’s
coffee table
in her long
silent living room

Stunningly colorful poetic portrait you've painted here Lady Monet, although I also see Renoir here also.

blossoming in the background of that silent room? The impression is positive. The scene beautiful.

That last line changes the whole mood of the poem for me. It feels like a reminiscence to me and does so remind me of a centerpiece of my mother's that we still keep 6 years after her death. Also, it occurs to me that all the beauty you describe reflects that of your mom.

This is a fabulous reminiscence, I love the way the poem itself is about the plant in detail, but about your mother and her home in essence.. Thank you...
