"Your babies will look like chocolate milk."

by Aaron Blair

You are brown like
the Mississippi at dusk,
that color just before black;
the wire of your frame
suggesting the field work
of your ancestors, suggesting
things of which my ancestors
would never approve. We
know that they roll in their
graves when we roll in our bed,
but we do it just the same.
Loving me would have killed you,
once, and maybe it still will.

Author's Note: The title is something that my sister said to me. Drink up.

What a wonderful picture of emotions this paints. Terse and loaded. Loved it.

I think I'll quote a good friend of mine on this one. "Halfie babies, halfie babies!!"

wonderful...it seems like you are looking the opposition in the face and flipping them off. great.

Shameful and inescapable truth about our past. I love your words and actions, the new truth you tell.

I apparently never commented on this, so I will now. This is so very well done. I love it.

Aaron, you truly outdid yourself on this poem. It's strikingly rich with truths that have looked us smack dab in the face for centuries. Super job and I love the title. Kyle Anne

Great poem. Deals with the whole issue of interracial relationships with honesty, maturity and courage.

I LOVE THIS PIECE, a favorite already...I have often dated inter-racially,\ and I was struck by the title in the random favorites section, but not sure what to expect...the first 6 lines are simply magical...the other lines to follow are good also, don't get me wrong, but the imagery at the outset is so spellbinding it made the rest of it so much more powerful...a pleasure to experience, peace, jewels

This piece is so playful & dead on.

This piece is s true. People ar just full of prejudice and ready to judge. My friend marrid an Afro-american and her Mother stopped talking to herr. Thank G-d it's become more acceptable (depending on where you live. Very powerful, homest and funny (in a black humor sort of way- no pun intended) Really good write!

My step sister is as blonde and pale as sunshine and her husband is of two ethnic backgrounds and my great niece is a doll with an olive complexion and big brown eyes....so you never really know where people get there looks what truly matters these days is where they will get there attitudes...it begins with setting aside the differences and it seems you do when you roll, love this poem. smh

This is bold and raw... and so very strong. It was a random "favorite" when I logged in today... It is a favorite of mine for eternity! ~N
