body of knowledge

by Laura Doom

I can't begin to describe
what you would fail to recognise
as the beauty or the horror
of this dislocated place
rapt in a timecast moment
frozen out from memory
of the sentient void.
I am no-one, nowhere;
yet of this, I'm unaware,
the paradox of extinction
born out of wisdom
and so it will never be.

The truth would deceive
the lie be as true
as reality's grip
on flesh and blood,
matter over mind.
The neon of love
as it flickers
the smog of mortality.
The sunlight of truth
filtered through
the fog of morality.
From vassal to vessel,
dust to dawn.

Can you imagine
a sky with no colour?
      with no horizon?
      with no substance?
Can you imagine
	absense of imagination?
	ignorance of the question?
	survival of the answer?

We are Morpheus and Mobius
dreamer and dreamless,
something and nothing,
now and forever.

This is not a place to be.

If someone is no-place and are no-where can they truly be said to exist? Great point. We don't exist or exist in such an impermanent matter that it doesn't really make a difference. Wow. Bummer of a thought, but at least I'm thinking and therefore... I am?

lovely and dreamlike, though it twists my thoughts a little as i ponder its meaning. You have some beautiful imagery such as the "neon of love" line. Its nice to see some new works from you x

This is superb, Laura. I wish to hell I had written this ;-) Intellectual and passionate, a grand argument for LIFE. In being we "fail...to recognize…extinction” – yes and the question too exists only in being, the question of ‘nothingness.’ “Can you imagine no imagination…Can you survive the answer?” – a wonderful play on words, as the paradox itself can’t survive the demise of its observer. You have taken this fundamental human question in all its simplicity and complexity and created a masterpiece. Beautifully written, it pulsates and vibrates, yet I am intensely aware of the painstaking attention to detail. And what a stunning snapshot of the human condition for better or for worse, “the neon of love flickering through the smog of mortality. The sunlight of truth filtered through the fog of morality. From vessel to vessel, dust to dawn.” Yes, this alone is the place to be. Thanks Laura, I haven’t felt this excited about a poem in a long time. 

Jean Paul Sartre has nothing on you my dear lady Doom. This reflection speaks existential angst and philosophy without being philosophical. Thanks, Laura.

Wow Laura! I love this prose as poem which is released from all constraint. It is brilliant in use of contrast and the battle that rages within. I also like the last stanza reminding me of "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end..." from the old King James version of the Bible. Very, very clever and unique!
