Purgatory is an Ashtray on Her Formica Table

by Max Bouillet

Virulent eyes infect with a glance.
A noxious gaze that saturates
with a tepid toxin. It seeps into my pores and
my throat swells shut. I gasp
and clutch for some emotional flotsam
resembling hope…
too late,
I capsize in an ocean of stares
immersed in rage and worthlessness.
It churns and curdles within me
as I breathe in the filth
and take it into my soul.
I construct a chrysalis of cynicism and loathing,
push away humanity
and die.
Only to be reborn as a tainted butterfly
with wings of deception
that flies forth to infect others.

Later,
I found out that she writes
down the names of people
that wrong her
in a wire rim notebook.
At night, she lights a candle,
rips out the pages and sets them ablaze
absolving them of their sins…

…my forgiveness is in the ash
smudged on that Formica table
in the apartment of a woman
that sips chamomile tea
and sends fiery prayers to God
begging forgiveness
for those incapable
of asking for themselves.

if i could curse, i would say oh, the s word... into the story we do delve, and have to look at ourselves... in the true spirit of your brillaint writing and mindblowing brain, i am dumbfounded and thinking... blessings...

Man oh man! Max, do you have a gift! I exclaim because I am again awestruck with the profound impact of your work, this one in particular. In this poem you take me into the depths, you fly me with your tainted wings, you humble me with your humility, and the forgiveness resurrects me. This one definately goes into my favorites folder.

Ohhh, my dear sweet heaven. There are images here that reach levels of genius I can only dream of. The whole moving picture this paints is exquisite and masterful. Absolute brilliance.

Whoa! What a piece of work this is. From start to finish I was enthralled by the diction and images. The ending adds such a twist that leaves me speechless. Excellent!

Excellent descriptiveness, poetic story telling. Compelling read from beginning to end.

From a vexatious beginning to a whimpered ending, emotionally charged poem of rejection and bitterness. Sarcasm screams out in the lines about forgiveness (to me at least).

and here i am, back again. *damn* damndamndamn. damndamndamndamn. i exhaled and my eyes went wide. it was a slice-and-dice that i most definitely let rip down my throat as i swallow. again. *drool.*

a very beautiful and effective little tale of hope or something like it.

those last two stanzas really pop. i think you lost me a bit in the beginning with all of the abstract language and images (even though i knew what you were saying!) i love, however, the concept of burning pages of names to absolve people of their sins. that's really beautiful.
