My Momma's Terrible Secret

by Carl Walker

Oh my momma, I love her so

though she's gotten old

she doesn't move near as fast

and plays bridge no more

one day she called me by my brother's name

and I said, "no momma, this is Mike,"

such a reproachful look she gave me

and asked, "Russell, have you gone and changed the name I gave you!?"

that was quickly forgotten as she drew near and asked in conspiritual whisper

"Have you heard these wild stories they are telling about me?"

fact is I had heard some pretty wild ones just this week

"they are saying that there are some people kidnapping old folks like me,

and they make a body double so no one knows you're gone."

She pulled me closer as she glanced around to make sure no one would hear

and whispered anxiously, "and I'm the double"

I, uh, didn't argue with her any more.

Author's Note: My momma was a queen among women, I wish I could tell you about her sometime. How kind she was to her relatives that alternately looked to her wisdom and cussed her because of their own unhappiness. She grew up in an age and place where racism was the backdrop and endangered her self to take a stand. She was active in recruiting new voters. She was a queen among women. I wish I could be half the man she was, or, uh, something like that.

A loving tribute to a very special woman in your life, your mom, in a unique way.

Carl, your poem made me think of this one: Age is opportunity no less Than youth itself, though in another dress, And as the evening twilight fades away, The sky is filled stars, invisible by day. -- Longfellow Congratulations on a great POTD. -- Bill

Congrats on POTD, Carl! You've told a story that is both poignant and humorous. The author's notes would warm any Mom's heart. Nice.

Quite effective...brilliant Carl. Maybe I'm mistaken, but this reads like an Alzheimer's poem, and if so superb addition to the genre.

PS: Congrats on POTD. I missed this one, but glad I finally had a chance to read it; a worthy choice.
