Quiet Waters by Alex SmythTrees lean over the shallow pool Spreading branches like a mother hen, Leaves murmuring solace, assurance.
As my toes seek a place in the rocks, crimson crustacians Jolt from their hiding places. Garish little memories. Shocked at being exposed, they raise jagged claws Only to realize their impotence. The color of passion Having no power here, they scuttlebutt backwards, Baptized into the current.
Peace restored, the smooth stones arch To meet my feet, the waterline caresses my legs As the breeze dances with my dress. I savor this restful day in these waters of contentment, As time and unforseen circumstances gather on the horizen. 09/12/2003 Author's Note: With a thanks for the encouragement. Posted by Quentin S Clingerman on 09/13/03 at 10:32 PM The last verse suggests there may well be a storm on the horizon.
The essence of tranquility so engagingly pictured. Takes me back to my childhood and the creek. |
Posted by Ashok Sharda on 09/14/03 at 03:23 AM The scene created in the first stanza is tranquillising. In the background of this murmuring solace, one realizes the terror of the situation.'Water of contentment' is where this leads you, ending on a positive note. I am happy. So very happy. |
Posted by Mara Meade on 09/14/03 at 08:07 PM Regardless of the storm or the garish memories... treasure the moment... beautifully said, Smyth. |
Posted by JD Clay on 09/15/03 at 03:40 AM Ripples of tranquility and a melancholy tone make this a read worthy of a lazy afternoon. Good stuff, Alex.
Peace... |
Posted by Philip F De Pinto on 09/15/03 at 11:08 AM one could take haven in your quiet waters, Alex. and rest the poet's head, weary of the turbid kind. |
Posted by Jeanne Marie Hoffman on 09/16/03 at 03:53 AM I like your first stanza, very original and imaginative descriptions. It makes the poem very "you", if that makes sense at all :) |

Quiet Waters, it's very lovely. We all next some quiet and peaceful times, now and then. May you receive peaceful times again. Hugs, Jean |
Posted by Max Bouillet on 09/16/03 at 06:09 PM Very spiritual and meditative. The main body is so relaxing that when you talk of time and unforeseen circumstances at the end, I immediately felt anxious. Great read that really had an effect. |

Posted by Maureen Glaude on 10/27/03 at 05:17 PM delectable. I liked how we move from the soft sounds of the words in the first stanza, to the crustier ones of the next. Your imagery of nature is astounding. and the use of the auditory in words. |
Posted by Kyle Anne Kish on 06/20/05 at 03:38 AM Alex, I was just doing a look see around and came upon this. Each phrase blends quietly and punctually into the next, but keeps the poem moving forward. Great imagery too. What a truly joyous read. :) |
