Why am I here today?

by Glenn Currier

Why am I here today

Why am I here today?
Mostly because you are.
I am
            you are
                        here
                                    today.

I am
            a poet,
                        a lover
                                    a seeker
I am an atom in the Periodic Table of Society
an expression of God, Great Spirit, Allah
and when my spirit was being breathed forth
            by the Spirit Maker
            she/he/it said: teacher.

I am here because you chose
            to learn
                        to change
                                    to be "open" not "close"
to be who you are, yeah!
and to be what you might be.
You chose to be
to be here and not there
                        or anywhere--but here.

Why am  I  here?
            Because my bosses chose me.
Who knows why they chose me?
Were not he and she who with me applied
                        also worthy-but were denied?
Ten books could not answer these.

Why am I here?
cause I didn't want my parents too near
                        but not so far
I couldn't reach them by car?

            or

                        this college was the best
                                    in my singular quest
for a place I could grow—
with fertile soil and seeds to sew?
One book could not answer these.

Why am I here today?
It's still a place where I can be
a teacher and the creative me.
Today is the best of days to see,  to be free
Why today?
Because when it comes right down to it
                        come what may
                                    all I've got is today.

As for an old teacher trying to stay fresh, I'd say you were highly successful here Glenn. A worthy reminder that we are all teachers and students to one another. I especially love this line: I am an atom in the Periodic Table of Society. Kudos!

*teary hug*... you always seem to post something with a message, just when I need it. I like the form... the questioning.. and even answering your own questions as you go. Well Done~!

Impossible question that begs an answer. An answer that is personal and difficult to share and yet you manage this feat within these lines very well. Great read that continues to resonate within me.
