drowning in summer by Andrew S Adamswith a cataclysmic hope,
the universe was created.
with a tear drop from god's eye,
the rain started to fall.
and tonight, this humid
midyear eve, the temperature drops
and soon, we are drowning in rain.
a kind of sweet surrender to the dusk.
as the day switches over, one to the next
(blurred as the defenition may be)
i am sinking. the water
trickles over my head, as i peacefully
await whatever end may come.
the air is hot against my skin,
as a breeze comes over the lake.
one more sailboat gone astray
in the ocean of vast summer
rainstorms.
before the twilight, my friend is the moon.
and in the moment, i am drowning in this dream.
a morning in the distance is a lifesaver
floating just out of reach in my titanic state.
once a marvel, struck down and struck out.
and here i am, breathing in my last breath-
as i drown in the summer night. 08/03/2003 Author's Note: revised 08/05/03 per the suggestions in the comments on this poem

Posted by Brian Francis on 08/05/03 at 04:21 PM I agree this is a neat piece. I also would slim down the usage of night/tonight a bit. And the first verse as Aiko said is a fine piece of work.

Posted by Max Bouillet on 08/06/03 at 10:12 PM Very cleansing. The water imagery and the suggestions of God at the beginning... draw me to thoughts of baptism, but the earthy natural imagery and the use of midyear eve (midsummer's night) gives it a slightly pagan feel. Great mix. Very spiritual on a personal level. |
Posted by Lacy D Phillips on 08/07/03 at 08:15 AM the combination of this poem plus La Traviata succeeded in giving me goosebumps. Well done! |
