Grow Old With Me (An Ode to "The One")

by Amber B

I swear you're the one to grow old with
with children running after grandchildren
and us grinning ear to ear
I swear we'll be happy always
I can feel my heart smile for years to come

Why we argue is because we're different
but those differences make us alive
challenging one another out of comfort zones
and into one another's minds

I can almost hear you thinking
your thoughts in my ears when I close my eyes
your heart thumping so close to mine
zigzagging patterns become one

I feel your hurt when you hurt
I feel your joy when you laugh
You fill me with a completeness
one I never imagined I could ever have

I swear you're the one to grow old with
sagging skin and ben-gay
comparing scars and arthritis pain
I could never stop loving you
ever
ever
ever
Even if I tried

this is great ... i recently wrote a piece about how much i love my husband's psoriasis because it is a part of him, like a map of his existence ... haven't posted it yet though

"challenging one another out of comfort zones and into one another's minds" ---really good line. Thanks for sharing.
